Workplace & Safety

At Carrizo, we view our people to be one of our key assets. We strive to make Carrizo a great place to work, where our employees can enjoy highly rewarding careers and share in the success of the Company. Our growth and success over the years are a direct result of having a team that seeks challenges and finds opportunities while caring for each other’s safety and well-being.

Workplace

We employ over 225 professionals, with more than 38% being technical employees such as engineers, geophysicists and geologists, as well as those providing technical and field support. Our management team averages almost 30 years of experience while our technical and operational teams average over 17 years of industry experience working for companies such as Shell, Texaco, Unocal, Continental Resources, and Devon Energy.

Technical Employees

The cyclical nature of our business requires us to build a company that can respond to macroeconomic changes quickly and outperform during cycle troughs. By focusing on maintaining and growing our employees’ core capabilities, we set ourselves up to do this. Each employee is responsible for managing his or her own career development and we offer many tools to assist in the process. To help facilitate our employees’ growth, supervisors and employees are encouraged to work together to set individual business and development SMART goals through the performance management process. SMART is an acronym giving criteria to guide in the setting of objectives. Both business and development SMART goals are meant to be specific, measurable, actionable, relevant, and time-bound. Our performance management process encourages ongoing coaching, feedback, and process assessment to help ensure goals are aligned with business performance. Additionally, training opportunities are provided on an on-going basis and include opportunities such as:

  • Leadership Development/Coaching
  • Business Communications
  • Goal Setting/Performance Management
  • Financial Goal Setting (retirement planning, 401k investing strategies, social security, college savings options)

Often times, there may be other training opportunities for our employees outside of the office. Some may find benefit in furthering their education by obtaining a secondary degree.

We also offer benefits outside the normal scope of medical and dental benefits to help our employees manage their life outside of the office. Health Advocate is designed to help our employees handle health care and insurance-related issues by cutting through barriers that so often create frustration and problems. Carrizo’s Legal Service Plan is a form of legal insurance designed to meet the most common legal needs. This service gives our employees the ability to talk to an attorney on any subject matter without worrying about high hourly costs. When it comes to traveling, our employees automatically receive travel assistance services provided by On Call International, a program designed to respond to most medical care situations and other emergencies they may encounter when traveling internationally.

Safety

The safety of our employees is very important to us, and we believe that commitment is demonstrated by our strong safety record. We have consistently outperformed the industry benchmark for total recordable incident rating.

Total Recordable Incident Rate

Success in this area requires everyone to put safety at the forefront. This commitment to safety is supported through on-going training, as well as continuing education and performance monitoring. Some examples of our Environment, Health, & Safety (EH&S) training classes are:

  • Hydrogen Sulfide
  • First Aid, CPR
  • Fire Prevention, Protection, and Emergency Planning
  • NORM, SPCC, and Hazardous Communication
  • Accident Prevention

Our field operations and corporate technical staff all receive EH&S training as appropriate, and we have EH&S representatives assigned to all area operations to help ensure our EH&S requirements are being met by our employees. Our commitment to safety extends to contractors as well. Carrizo uses various third-party databases, such as PEC Safety, and company protocols across the organization to evaluate potential contractors before hiring. Contractors are an integral part of Carrizo’s business, and their well-being and safety is similarly a priority. Depending on the type of service or work, contractors are required to maintain specific safe work practices. Therefore, we ask all contractors who work on Carrizo locations to have safety programs that are compatible with Carrizo standards. In order to further incentivize a safe workplace, we sometimes tie contractor bonus compensation to their safety record. An example of this was in the Eagle Ford Shale, where the frac crew only received a bonus if they had no reportable incidents.

Continuous Improvement

At Carrizo, we are committed to excellence in EH&S. This commitment has helped us work towards our goal of zero incidents and injuries across the workforce. We recognize that safety achievements happen in a number of different ways, and we want to recognize our employees when they are creative in their approach. The Company values all contributions to workplace safety, and we are currently working on a Safety Awards Program aimed at rewarding employees for being responsible for their safety and the safety of those around them. We believe that every task can be completed injury free.

To continue improving our program, we proactively perform voluntary compliance audits in order to thoroughly review response and safety protocols in order to enhance Carrizo’s EH&S standards. These audits allow us to be more transparent about how we are staying in compliance with state and federal regulations and also help ensure proper and efficient operations. In the past, we have performed compliance audits in Colorado and self-disclosed the results to the state. We have also completed third-party audits in Pennsylvania and hydrogen sulfide audits in Texas. Our rigs are also regularly inspected to ensure the equipment is as safe as possible for our employees and contractors.
