The safety of our employees is very important to us, and we believe that commitment is demonstrated by our strong safety record. We have consistently outperformed the industry benchmark for total recordable incident rating.
Success in this area requires everyone to put safety at the forefront. This commitment to safety is supported through on-going training, as well as continuing education and performance monitoring. Some examples of our Environment, Health, & Safety (EH&S) training classes are:
First Aid, CPR
Fire Prevention, Protection, and Emergency Planning
NORM, SPCC, and Hazardous Communication
Our field operations and corporate technical staff all receive EH&S training as appropriate, and we have EH&S representatives assigned to all area operations to help ensure our EH&S requirements are being met by our employees. Our commitment to safety extends to contractors as well. Carrizo uses various third-party databases, such as PEC Safety, and company protocols across the organization to evaluate potential contractors before hiring. Contractors are an integral part of Carrizo’s business, and their well-being and safety is similarly a priority. Depending on the type of service or work, contractors are required to maintain specific safe work practices. Therefore, we ask all contractors who work on Carrizo locations to have safety programs that are compatible with Carrizo standards. In order to further incentivize a safe workplace, we sometimes tie contractor bonus compensation to their safety record. An example of this was in the Eagle Ford Shale, where the frac crew only received a bonus if they had no reportable incidents.
At Carrizo, we are committed to excellence in EH&S. This commitment has helped us work towards our goal of zero incidents and injuries across the workforce. We recognize that safety achievements happen in a number of different ways, and we want to recognize our employees when they are creative in their approach. The Company values all contributions to workplace safety, and we are currently working on a Safety Awards Program aimed at rewarding employees for being responsible for their safety and the safety of those around them. We believe that every task can be completed injury free.
To continue improving our program, we proactively perform voluntary compliance audits in order to thoroughly review response and safety protocols in order to enhance Carrizo’s EH&S standards. These audits allow us to be more transparent about how we are staying in compliance with state and federal regulations and also help ensure proper and efficient operations. In the past, we have performed compliance audits in Colorado and self-disclosed the results to the state. We have also completed third party audits in Pennsylvania and hydrogen sulfide audits in Texas. Our rigs are also regularly inspected to ensure the equipment is as safe as possible for our employees and contractors.
